Our Mission

The mission of the Family Service Center is to assist individuals and families in achieving improved well being and to be a leading resource for providing education, consultation and psychotherapy to those who live, work or attend school in Glenview, Kenilworth, Northbrook and Wilmette.

The family is the basic unit of well being… It is our core belief that families have the resources to adequately respond to life's challenges. Our job is not to do for, but to facilitate the efforts of individuals and their families to more effectively resolve the problems in their lives and improve their abiity to respond to stressful events.

How we help individuals and families

  • We provide therapy for more than 400 individuals and families per year.
  • We offer marriage counseling, helping maintain strong families.
  • We provide counseling to families that have experienced divorce, allowing children to have the best possible chance of growing up to live healthy lives.
  • We help families find an appropriate balance around issues of stress in the lives of children including schoolwork and social issues.
  • We offer therapy on a sliding scale, thanks to support from the New Trier and Northfield Townships and United Way, allowing us to serve people who would otherwise be unable to afford services.

How we help the community

  • Last year, we provided a number of educational talks at local schools, on subjects such as bullying, divorce, depression, and stress.
  • Employers called on us to help employees deal with the unexpected death of a colleague.
  • High schools asked us to provide grief counseling to students and faculty immediately after two suicides and one fatal car accident.
  • Our highly trained therapists offer regular talks throughout the communities we serve on subjects such as how to talk with your teenager, how to deal with family life once you retire, how to cope with death.
  • We participate in Community Crisis Response Teams assembled by the affected community or organization. For example last year we sent in a team of therapists to help high school staff and students deal with a student suicide.

Family Service Center is there to help families when they are experiencing stress. We see families when they are experiencing minor or temporary stress to help them get through a rough time, and in other cases we see families who are profoundly affected by patterns of behavior that cause massive problems in the way they function. In both cases we are able to help families and individuals gain better understanding of the tools they have to deal with what is happening in their lives.
