Professional Education

Family Service Center plays a unique role in the Glenview, Northbrook, Wilmette and Kenilworth communities because we not only provide therapy services to individuals and families, but we also help therapists maintain their credentials in accordance with state requirements.

The following video series is geared to the professional:

Monthly Video Series

A monthly video series—teaching tapes on Bowen theory and related topics will be presented on Fridays, from 2:00–3:30 p.m.
Robert Noone, Ph.D. or Sydney Reed, LCSW will lead a discussion following each tape. Sessions will be held at Family Service Center, 1167 Wilmette Ave., Wilmette, IL.
CEU's - 18 for entire annual series. Fee: $100 for annual series/ $15 per event.

September 14th

Emotional Detachment - In this tape Dr. Bowen describes the therapeutic significance of developing emotional objectivity while staying in contact with the family. This involves learning to focus on process rather than content, to be more of an observer than a reactor, and relating to the system without becoming a part of the system.

October 12th

Anxiety & Emotional Reactivity in Therapy- Dr. Bowen focuses on the ways in which anxiety is manifested in a family, how the level of differentiation affects the ability to adapt to acute or chronic stress, and the ways in which a therapist can reduce the anxiety so that the process id differentiation can begin.

November 30th

Symptom Development in the Nuclear Family-In this "chalk talk" tape, Dr. Bowen describes the four primary variables wihch govern the development of symptoms in the nuclear family, how they operate in the family, and how to account for differences in those who develop emotional, behavioral, or physical symptoms.

December 14th

Differentiation of Self and the "I" Position - Dr. Bowen describes the centrality of the concept of differentiation of self in the theory and aspects of what is entailed in developing a position for oneself in one's own family.
