Family Service Center Has Great Educational Opportunities

Our mission calls for the Family Service Center to be a leading resource for providing education, consultation and psychotherapy to those who live, work or attend school in the communities of Glenview, Kenilworth, Northbrook and Wilmette. As part of the goal, we offer a number of educational programs to the community to address topics of current interest and importance.

Community Education Programs 2010

Bullying & Caring - This program provides perspective on why bullying occurs by reviewing current research on the issue. It explores how we as parents and community can respond to this issue.

Connecting With Our Children - This presentation will explore topics including how to connect with your child in communication, how to establish structure/boundaries for self & instill these in your child, and how to raise competent children with strong self-esteem and compassion for others.

Depression Re-considered: Emerging Knowledge About the #1 Emotional Disorder - Recent research in a number of fields is leading to a significant shift in how depression is viewed. Major depressive disorder is by far the most widely diagnosis of emotional disorder worldwide & a recent survey indicates that 1 out of 10 Americans have used anti-depressant medication. In this presentation, Dr. Noone will present some of the knowledge & questions emerging in current scientific research along with a variety of approaches in dealing with major depressive disorder.

Don't Rearrange My Spice Drawer: The Effects of Retirement on Relationships - With partners spending more time at home, do conflicts about tasks, personal space and planning re-emerge? Observing your style or relating to your family can provide helpful insights.

Impact of Divorce throughout Childhood - In the short run a divorce produces powerful & predictable symptoms in children no matter their age. However, in the long run, it is the family style that determines children's resilience. This important topic will be the subject of a discussion by a panel of professionals who observe & work with children & families experiencing divorce in their lives.

Parental Wisdom & Confidence: What Experts Can't Teach You about Parenting - Parenting is both a demanding and fulfilling job. Under these demands, parents can become unsure of themselves & lose sight of their own wisdom. This presentation will focus on ideas related to discovering & relying on your inherent wisdom & confidence as a parent.

Social Intelligence & its Development in the Family - Brain and behavioral research have highlighted the fact that individuals have multiple forms of intelligence & that both social & emotional intelligence are better predictors of success in life and IQ. In this seminar the topic of social intelligence & the the influence of the family in its development will be presented.

Stress and Resiliency in Children - Despite the potentially negative effects of prolonged or intense stress, recent research has led to the discovery that stress can have beneficial effects on the developing brain. This presentation will raise questions related to distinguishing between "good" and "bad" stress & the role parents can play.

Stop Yelling at Me: Understanding and Managing Parent-Child Conflict - Disagreements are basic to all families & an important aspect of healthy relationships. However, when exaggerated, conflict can become destructive. This presentation will explore the impact of basic relationships patterns on the resolution of differences.

Birth Order and Its impact on Parenting and Marriage - Why do siblings turn out so differently? Knowledge about the impact of the birth orders of a parent & child or husband and wife can lead to a greater understanding & appreciation of the relationship. This presentation focuses on personality profiles associated with an individual's siblings position and the influence it has in one's adult life, particularly in the parent-child & marital relationships.
